慈济大藏经 - 波士顿中国城联欢会 Asian Arts Festival in Boston

Asian Arts Festival in Boston

Tzu Chi Foundation, Boston, joined the annual festival of Asian Arts held in Boston, on the east coast of the United States, to promote its programs and its values.

The celebration takes place every summer in the main street of the city’s Chinatown, with traditional performances from many different cultures. This year it was held on Sunday, July 11; a lively Chinese lion dance was one of the highlights of the day. Volunteers from the foundation took part, to introduce Tzu Chi to the many spectators; they explained how the local Tzu Chi Academy at Belford provides lessons in Chinese each Sunday.

English-speaking parents learnt that, in Hualien, its headquarters in east Taiwan, Tzu Chi hosts summer camps for children interested in learning Chinese. One of the festival-goers, Hannah, said that she had been to the Jing Si Abode, where Master Cheng Yen lives with her community of nuns. She has signed up to become a volunteer. "I think Tzu Chi does good things,” she said. “I remember that, after the earthquake in China, there were lots of people asking for donations. So I think it's a good cause." Youngsters flocked to Tzu Chi's stand for a quick art lesson and adults asked about the special potted plants made by the volunteers, which sold for US$5 each.

It has been more than a decade since Tzu Chi first took part in the festival; it is their way to spread the message of love through this annual celebration of culture.
